The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
