More than two dozen Olympic medallists, mentors and other global sports figures have endorsed a letter demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing titleholder and coach, who is sentenced to die in Iran.

Escalating International Outrage

During rising global condemnation over the country's escalating use of capital punishment as a instrument of suppression, the forcefully phrased statement censures the authorities's decision to uphold the death sentence of the athlete.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in the northern province, was taken into custody for taking part in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and accused of backing an opposition group. He has spent half a decade in prison, where he has been mistreated and kept in isolation.

“Competition is meant to promote hope, unity, and fortitude,” the supporters stated. “The execution of a winner for his political views is a direct assault on these principles and a caution to any competitor who attempts to express dissent.

History of Executing Competitors

The appeal pointed out that the athlete's case was not unique and emphasized the nation's past of putting to death sports champions for their views, such as a national team leader, skipper of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a young Iranian sports titleholder, was put to death.

Further signatories to the appeal include a yachting pioneer, who captained the first all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a renowned nautical honor; the ex- skipper of the soccer side an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the country's selection for the global tournament.

Arrest and Unjust Proceedings

The athlete was detained in early 2020. The allegations against him included “causing deterioration on Earth through arson and ruin of state assets”. His sentence has been reversed twice but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the third attempt. His legal proceedings was denounced as “deeply biased” by rights defenders and groups.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to prevent the boxer's death sentence comes after a 2023 appeal to the United Nations official for human rights, endorsed by in excess of 100 human rights experts and organizations, urging intervention to stop the sports figure's capital punishment.

Execution Crisis

Based on data, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has attained alarming dimensions”.
