No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
